Photo Tips

  • Take clear photos in natural light.
  • Take photos at eye level
  • Avoid flash.
  • Get as much detail as possible.
  • Remember the portrait is only as good as the photo, I can’t draw what I can’t see.
  • Send several photos, some of which have closeups of face and fur color.
  • When sending the pictures through email, send the full resolution file if you can. That way I can see all the details and produce a better painting.
  • I may be able to schedule a photo shoot and take the pictures if you are within reasonable driving distance. Charges for  photo session and mileage apply.

Example of good photo

This is an excellent photo to work from. It is taken in bright natural light. The features are clear, and it is taken on the level of the pet so no distortion occurs.

Example of bad photo

This photo isn't so great for  a reference photo. It has all the features obscured in shadow and is slightly blurry. It is also taken above the pet so can cause distortion.

Note both these photos were taken with an ipod touch camera so even a cheap camera can still take decent photos when following the tips.
